いろいろと話題のグレタさんの本『NO ONE IS TOO SMALL TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

』を読みました。

ペンギン・ブックス出版の約70ページの薄い本で英語版しか出ていませんが、難しい単語や言い回しはほとんど出てきません。グレタさん自身がスウェーデン人で英語ネイティブじゃないせいもあるのかな?

内容は書き下ろしではなく、2018年9月から2019年4月までの彼女の講演やFacebookページへの書き込み11個を集めたものとなっています。

その中から〈これは〉と思った部分を抜き出して、簡単な訳をつけてみました。

■ Our Lives are in Your Hands - Sep. 2018

Because the climate and the biosphere don’t care about our politics and our empty words for a single second. They only care about what we actually do.

気候も大気圏も、政界や人間の空虚な言葉なんて、これっぽっちも気にかけていません。 彼らが気にしているのは、実際の人間の行動だけです。

■ Almost Everything is Black and White - Oct. 2018

So we can’t save the world by playing by the rules. Because the rules have to be changed. Everything needs to change. And it has to start today. So everyone out there: it is now time for civil disobedience. It is time for rebel.

I was so frustrated that nothing was being done about the climate crisis, and I felt like I had to do something, anything. And sometimes NOT doing things — like just sitting down outside the parliament — speaks much louder than doing things. Just like a whisper sometimes is louder than shouting.

I am sorry, but saying everything will be all right while continuing doing nothing at all is not just hopeful to us. In fact, it’s the opposite of hope. And yet this is exactly what you keep doing. Your can just sit around waiting for hope to come — you’re acting like spoiled, irresponsible children. You don’t seem to understand that hope is something you have to earn.

申し訳ありませんが、何一つ行動を起こさないまま「すべては上手くいく」と言われても、まったく希望を持てません。一体どこに希望があるのでしょうか。でも、それこそまさに、あなたたちのしていること。ただその辺りに座り、希望がやってくるのを待っている…。それは、甘やかされた無責任な子どもの振る舞いです。希望とは、自らによって、手に入れるものだと理解できていないかのように。

But you cannot ignore the scientists, or the science, or the millions of schoolchildren who are school-striking for their right to a future. I beg you, please do not fail in this.

We are the ones making a difference.

■ Can You Hear Me?- Apt. 2019

You don’t listen to the science because you are only interested in solutions that will enable you to carry on life before. Like now. And those answers don’t exist any more. Because you did not act in time. Avoiding climate breakdown will require cathedral thinking. We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling. Sometimes we just simply have to find a way.

あなたたちが科学に耳を貸さないのは、あなたたちが聞きたいのは、これまで通りの暮らしを認めてくれる答えだけだから。今のように。でも、そんな答えはもはや存在していません。もっと早くに手を打っておかなかったから。 気候崩壊を避けるには、大聖堂的思考が必要です。天井の造り方がはっきり分からないままでも、土台造りをスタートしなければなりません。 ときに、見つけ出す以外に道はないのです。

No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference (English Edition)

グレタさんの主張は実にシンプルです。本の中でも何度となく繰り返されます。

「科学的な行動を。パリ協定の遵守を。そのために、二酸化炭素を大量排出する化石燃料の使用停止を。」

そして彼女の演説の特徴は、キーフレーズを繰り返すことです。日本では「How dare you!」が有名になりましたが、最初に世界的に話題になったTED Talkのときからそうでしたよね。

いくつか、多くの人々が興味を持っている、彼女と家族についても書かれています。

• スピーチライターはいなくて、自分自身が書いていること。ただし、科学的に誤ったことを伝えたくないので、その点に関しては確認を依頼していること。
• 学校を休んでのストライキは、家族を含めた周囲に好意的に受け止められなかったこと。でもアスペルガーのおかげで、同調することやされることに捉われずに1人でスタートできたこと。
• 興味があるのは、気候変動を止めることであり、それに役立てられないのであれば人気を集めることにも維持することにも興味がないこと。まだ何も成し遂げていない。

好き嫌いで彼女を論じるのはもちろん自由ですが、「誰が」とか「どう」とかばかりではなく、「何を」にもっと着目すべきじゃないかな、と改めて思いました。
